Sunstone is a unique feldspar variety that can take on a lot of different colours. The stone is related to, for example, Amazonite, Labradorite and Moonstone, but its colour is not caused by the structure of the stone, like with the latter. There are tiny inclusions of the iron mineral Hematite that cause the red or orange shimmer. Copper can also occur and then the Sunstone shimmers green/red. These are most often found in Oregon, USA and these Oregon Sunstones are the most valuable. Sunstone was first discovered in the 19th century in small deposits in Siberia, which caused it to be a quite costly gemstone. Only when larger quantities were discovered in India along the 20th century, the stone became a bit more affordable. Raw pieces of Sunstone are less popular, due to the fact that there are very few extravagant mineral formations found.
