Fluorite is a colourful and popular mineral with collectors and mineral fanatics. Its however also widely used for industrial purposes, like in microscope or telescope lenses, welding and smelting and obtaining fluorine-chemicals. The mineral gets its name from one of these functions; via the Latin ‘fluere’, taken from flux, a substance that promotes smelting. The word fluorescence (giving off light in UV) is derived from the word Fluorite, because this effect was first observed in this mineral. Pure Fluorite is colourless, because the many colours that Fluorite can occur in, are caused by impurities. The mineral often occurs in cubes, but also other isometric shapes, like octahedrons. Fluorite is used for both jewellery and worked pieces, but also as rough minerals for collection, which makes it popular with a wide audience.
