Amazonite is a blue-green feldspar variety. The stone gets its name from the Amazon river, where men used to find similar green stones. Later on these stones turned out to not be Amazonite at all, but the name stayed. Amazonite is often carved or cut, even though it can be a challenge due to Amazonite tearing easily. The stone has been found in jewellery from the Ancient Egyptians, but can’t be found in any text from Ancient times. Amazonite gets its colour from lead and water traces in the stone. People use to think the colour came from copper, because copper often causes minerals to show green or blue colours (like Malachite or Azurite). This claim has been disproven in the 1980s.
