Morganite is a popular, pink Beryl variety, which means is doesn’t differ much from other Beryls like Aquamarine or Emerald when it comes to minerology. The stone is named after famous banker J.P. Morgan, who financed a lot of geological expeditions in the start of the 20th century. The colour is the stone is caused by positively charged magnesium in the crystal structure of the stone. Depending on the charge of the magnesium (2+, 3+ or even 4+), the colour can vary from peach to dark pink. Morganite can even be a little pink if there’s some iran throughout the stone. This is also what gives aquamarine its colour, so the purple variety is a mix of both. Morganite possesses a strong pleochroism, which means that the colour can vary based on the crystal’s orientation. The mineral can form gigantic crystals, because it forms in the last stages of lava cooling; up to 10 kilograms, or 22 pounds!
