Aquamarine is a light blue, light green or cyan blue beryl variety. Gemstones like of Morganite and Emerald are also kinds of beryl. Aquamarine derives its name from the Latin ‘aqua’ and ‘marina’ which mean ‘seawater’ when combined. This refers to the clear blue water of the Mediterranean Sea. The Ancient Romans were convinced that the stone would protect them from peril at sea. The mineral gets its colour from positively charged iron molecules that are dispersed throughout the mineral. The biggest aquamarine ever cut is the Dom Pedro aquamarine from the Minas Gerais province in Brazil. The gigantic crystal that this beautiful jewel is cut from weighed in at around 100(!) pounds and measured a solid 3 feet!
