Garnet is a hard mineral group with two variable elements in its formula and it can be divided into two sub-groups. The X and the Y in the formula stand for different elements, the X is Calcium in the first group with the Y as a variable element and the Y is aluminium in the second group with the X as a variable element. The most common kinds of garnet are: Almandine (deep red), Grossular (green, but also red, brownish red or yellow-like), Rhodolite (deep red to purplish red) and Spessartine (orange or red). Garnet can almost have all colours, however, blue is very rare. Most kinds of have a crystal structure in the shape of a dodecahedron, a regular twelve-faced polyhedron. Garnet is often found in these well shaped crystals.
