Topaz is a popular gemstone and is used a lot in jewellery. The mineral had a high hardness and can occur in a lot of different colours, but colourless Topaz is found most. Blue Topaz is made from colourless Topaz by putting it in a hadron collider. Depending of the location of the hadron collider, a different shade is produced. It can be called London Blue Topaz (dark blue) or Swiss blue Topaz (light blue). Naturally coloured Topaz is very rare and highly prized, but one variety takes the crown: Imperial Topaz. The name is a tribute to the Tsars of Russia, where the largest amount of this orange-pink stone was found, who were the only ones that could possess the gem. Nowadays this variety is only found in Ouro Prêto in Brazil. Topaz crystals can grow to massive sizes; the biggest ever was nothing short of 37 kilograms!
