What are mexican geodes and how are they formed?
Try to imagine standing on the edge of a volcanic crater which is filled with red hot boiling lava. On the surface of this glowing slush you constantly see the gas-bubbles splashing as they reach the surface. Millions of these round gas-bubbles are on its way from deep down trying to reach the surface. Once outside the crater, the lava starts cooling down at the top. All gas-bubbles on their way to the surface are now stuck underneath this petrified ceiling. (Just like hot porridge that forms a skin when you take it from the fire). The bubbles freeze as the lava cools and become encased. In the Mexican region Chihuahua an 80 million year old ‘lava-pit’ has been discovered where these petrified gas-bubbles are found.
What can be found inside?
No one can see from the outside what is inside. Not until the geode has been cut with the special pair of plyers the contents of the ball will be discovered. The beauty of wonderfully coloured agate or the sparkling of crystals will show you once again the wonder of mother nature.
