The name Amethyst is composed from the ancient Greek words ‘a’ and ‘methyskoo’, which put together mean ‘not intoxicated’. In history, Amethyst has always been popular by its supposed preventing of hangovers and drunkenness. Amethyst is a variety of quartz that is coloured by iron ions. These are 3+ charged when it forms, which causes dark-yellow colour, but then changes to 4+ when the crystal receives natural radiation from surrounding rock, which causes the purple colour. Because of the purple colour, people often name Amethyst as their favourite stone. The colour of Amethyst varies from light to dark purple, with the last one being the most valuable. Amethist manly comes from quartz-containing water that settles in geodes; cavities in the earth formed by volcanism or other processes. The black amethyst is a rare and fascinating variety of amethyst that exhibits a deep, dark purple color. This unique shade is primarily due to the presence of iron ions in its crystal structure, which interact with natural radiation in the earth’s environment.
